‘The Shaymen’ come up trumps

Charles C

Last night at The Phoenix saw a roller-coaster of a quiz; both in terms of who was leading and in terms of the style and type of questions thrown at quizzers. One minute there was a question on vintage James Bond computer games the next we were looking at freeze-frames from movies with umbrellas in. There were even a couple of cheeky, locally-flavoured questions comprising one on local hero, David Bowie and another on The Kinks’ Waterloo Sunset (tunefully hummed by ‘Dumber & Dumber’).

The Free Drink questions did throw a few curveballs that even the Chicago Cubs might not have been able to handle, with no-one knowing that it was Mark Cohn who had been walking in Memphis with his blue suede shoes on. All was saved in the back-up question, with a gentleman from 'Trump Up The Scam, Trump It Up, Trump It Up' (TUTSTIUTIU) knowing that Huggy Bear was a character in Starsky & Hutch.

At the final whistle, three points was all that separated 3rd (‘You’ve Got Mail’) from 6th. A nail-biting tie-breaker for second-from-last place (for the bottle of wine) saw TUTSTIUTIU beating ‘Farage Blow Donald’s Trump' . Meanwhile, 2nd-placers: ‘The Quizzards of Oz’ had put on a bit of a lead over 3rd but a ‘bigly’ performance from The Shaymen meant they walked away with the cash-pot.
