Frequently asked questions

How much does your service cost?

We have developed a fully responsive scaled fee for our service that adjusts according to attendance. Your venue’s base rate is $180 plus $2 for every participant (plus GST). The benefit is that you only pay more for our service when the number of people taking part increases, reflecting the benefit to the pub of more trade attracted to the bar. You will pay less during those quieter periods that may be caused by changes in the weather, TV or sports schedules. This also acts as an incentive to Question One and our Hosts to work closely with your venue to attract more customers to the event. Tailored rates apply for special events such as themed quizzes, wedding receptions, private or corporate functions.

Most other trivia companies charge a flat rate no matter how many people turn up to play. One of our biggest competitors charges $300 plus GST. This is if there’s 10 people playing or 50 people playing. We would only charge you $300 if there’s 60 people taking part. Any less and your fee from us is less! Bit of a no brainer!!

What does our venue need to provide?

We provide all materials – pens, answer sheets, picture sheets and tailored poster designs. We also send post-event photos for you to put on your social spaces. We provide a cordless microphone which can be connected to your existing sound system. You are also responsible for  providing the prizes (bar vouchers, gift cards etc) which vary depending on your budget and your local competitors. We know from experience the importance of marketing, and as with any event at your venue, you will need to maintain on-site promotion (A-boards, chalk boards, posters, flyers) and social spaces to promote the event. We will help wherever we can and our Hosts are also on the lookout for opportunities to help you increase player numbers.

How long does it take to build a crowd?

Depending on the time of year and your venue, it takes up to 2 months to have a regular following. Trivia nights can range in size from 10 to 100, but once you have regular teams settled it’s very consistent. Leading up to the launch, marketing is absolutely critical. This is why we have our ‘New Venue Offer’ which gives you 2 free events in the first 8 weeks! Get in touch for more details.

How does Question One market the event?

Both online and at your venue: we provide posters and flyer designs for your venue, we do instagram clues, we advertise on Facebook and share with you photos of the winners to help enliven your social spaces and promote future events.

Is having a trivia night profitable?

Every person who attends hopefully purchases several drinks and other refreshments at the bar during the evening. Ideally, what we want to see is teams of people all having a meal, drinks and a good time; week in, week out! We want to see the cash register ticking over just as much as you.

How do we decide the frequency, time and night of the week?

Experience shows that trivia teams prefer regularity. A weekly event saves them guessing whether trivia is on or not and reduces the risk that they’ll go elsewhere as they tend to meet weekly. Bi-weekly or monthly quizzes are harder to establish as they lack routine, though they are sometimes suited to more remote venues with a ‘captive audience’. Start times vary, with the most popular between 7-8pm. Quiz start times tend to be earlier in the centre of a city and get later the further out you go.  We can always delay the start if groups are running late or there are other delays. The most popular nights for quizzing are: Monday to Thursday, but we also have some diamonds on Sunday evening.

Why do I need you when I can write and present a quiz myself?

Our trivia hosts are trained entertainers and our service is like hiring extra staff for the duration of your event – without the worries of paying them separately. This means you can concentrate on your most important task such as being attentive to customers and serving refreshments throughout the course of the night. Our content and materials are not ‘bought on-line’ and our format is popular. It takes 3 to 5 hours to write a good, balanced and varied quiz that customers will not encounter elsewhere, so this saves you additional valuable time and resources. Writing a fresh, entertaining and balanced set of questions that appeals to a good range of people is an art form!

How will I be invoiced?

Itemised invoices are sent by email at the start of the month following your event, whether it’s a one off, periodic or weekly event. The invoice will have GST added on to it which some businesses and charities can claim back, according to their circumstances. Payment needs to be received within 28 days of the invoice date to avoid late payment charges. The invoice will include details of Question One’s bank account so that you can transfer the money easily and electronically.

What are your payment terms?

Our terms are strictly 28 days for weekly quiz events, with a deposit of 50% required for special events. We accept BACS / electronic payments only (unless in exceptional circumstances). An $80 cancellation fee applies to regular events cancelled on the day. Cancellations must be confirmed by email to alenka@question.one

What types of payments do you accept?

We accept electronic BACS transfers only, with a preference for GoCardless, which is a safe, controllable for yourselves and a convenient form of Direct Debit. We can send a link to set you up easily with GoCardless. For safety and accounting purposes we do not accept cash on the night.
